Infrared (IR) filters for portable or airborne LIDAR devices (1064 & 1550 nm), e.g laser rangefinders.
The application environment
The infrared LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) technology uses infrared light to image objects. The remote sensing technology illuminates a target with laser light and analyzes the reflected light. The LIDAR technology is applied in portable or airborne devices to create high resolution maps, remote sensing, and laser altimetry, among other. LIDAR is for instance applied in laser rangefinders.
Laser rangefinders are often portable and used outdoor in all weather. In this type of application a filter (also called cover lens) can function as an additional protection of the sensitive optical components. It needs to be scratch and impact resistant, light weight and hydrophobic. A hydrophobic topcoat repels (rain)water so droplets run of very easy. This ensures minimum distortion of the signal (both emitter and detector). Laser rangefinders based on 1550 nm near infrared light are the so called eye-safe models.
PSC products and solutions
Our casted acrylic filters combined with an optimised 1550 AR surface treatment result in excellent filter solutions for LIDAR applications which apply the 1550 nm infrared light, e.g. eye-safe laser rangefinders. For LIDAR applications, which apply 1064 nm infrared light, our Solaris S306 IR (with or without NIR AR) is the perfect solution.
